The Perfect Smile

Friday, February 5th, 2016

Don’t you love when you find the perfect pair of shoes? How about that perfect restaurant you just discovered? Why not have a perfect smile? A perfect smile it well within reach and can be easier to achieve than you might think.

The first step to creating your perfect smile is a consultation with your cosmetic dentist. You may discover that your perfect smile is only a tooth whitening away! If the smile that mother nature gave you isn’t making you happy, this consultation can bring a professional eye to the problem and help you plan a strategy, and treatment plan, for achieving your goals.

The majority of smile makeovers can be completed in just a couple of visits using dental veneers. Dental veneers are thin porcelain shells that dentists use to change the color, shape and visual position of teeth. There is minimal preparation so the majority of your natural tooth is intact. Dental veneers are incredibly lifelike in appearance — and are extremely durable.

You might be a candidate for dental veneers if you have the following problems with your smile:

  • Teeth are discolored and bleaching doesn’t work on the staining.
  • Teeth are poorly shaped or misshapen.
  • There are small gaps between teeth.

Using dental veneers your cosmetic dentist can fill in those small gaps and your smile will look like you had braces for months. Some people have teeth that have been stained by medications or are an unattractive shape. Again, dental veneers can easily correct these problems giving you a beautiful, white, straight smile.

What Are These White Spots On My Teeth?

Sunday, January 24th, 2016

Have you noticed white spots on your teeth? These white spot lesions can be appear for a number of reasons — your dentist will work to determine the cause of your white spots and if they are a cause for concern.

Sometimes white spots on teeth are caused by nutrition, genetic predisposition or an excessive intake of fluoride. A common cause for white spots is orthodontic treatment and the white spots will be noticed when brackets are removed.

Most of the time white spots are actually areas of decalcified tooth enamel which is an early sign of cavity formation. Fluoride treatments may help to remineralize the tooth and hold off tooth decay.

While fluoride is terrific at helping to prevent tooth decay, too much of it can also cause white spots. If you live in an area where there are naturally high fluoride levels you may encounter this problem which is called fluorosis.

Braces are associated with white spot formation because patients with orthodontic braces often have a difficult time cleaning their teeth. This results in a build-up of plaque on the tooth surface. Acids produced by plaque can severely damage the tooth enamel which may eventually become tooth decay. White spots following the removal of braces can cause severe upset — the teeth are now straight but their color is no longer uniform.

The best treatment for these types of white spot lesions is prevention, of course. Follow your dentist’s instructions regarding oral hygiene care when wearing braces and maintain your schedule of professional dental cleanings.

Treatment options for white spot lesions can include fluoride treatments, dental bonding and dental veneers depending upon how severe the case.

If you suddenly notice a white spot on your tooth that hasn’t been there before — schedule a visit with your dentist. If it is the beginning of tooth decay we can work to prevent a cavity from forming or from becoming larger. Treating problems when they are small is easier and less expensive — don’t wait because teeth can’t heal themselves.

Find out more about tooth decay and your treatment options by contacting Wilbanks Smile Center in Toccoa, GA today at 706-391-8777. We’ll be happy to schedule your next visit!

New Year - New Smile

Tuesday, January 12th, 2016

Have you thought of starting the new year looking a little better? Improving the appearance of your smile using cosmetic dentistry can make a major change in your appearance.

Cosmetic dental procedures run the gamut from a simple tooth whitening to full mouth makeovers so don’t be afraid to ask your dentist about your options. Changing your smile may be more affordable than you realize.

Tooth whitening is the most popular cosmetic dental procedure for good reason. Professional tooth whitening can dramatically brighten your smile, bleaching away years of staining and making your smile instantly younger. Over-the-counter whitening may help when teeth are only slightly dingy. However, only a dentist can tell you whether the staining on your teeth can be bleached away and provide the professional strength bleaching to make your smile bright again. Teeth that are going to undergo bleaching should have been professionally cleaned shortly before your bleaching appointment to ensure the best results.

Some staining cannot be bleached away. This often includes the grayish colored stains caused by antibiotic use. In these cases dental veneers are the perfect choice.

Dental veneers are very thin porcelain shells created in a dental lab and are specially designed for your smile. Dental veneers can do more than make your teeth white, they can also be used to provide “instant orthodontics” for teeth that are somewhat crooked. Dental veneers can also correct a misshapen tooth and close that too-wide gap between the front teeth. Dental veneers are one of the most amazing innovations in the field of cosmetic dentistry. With very little preparation to the existing tooth they can completely recreate a smile in just a couple of visits.

Which cosmetic procedure is right for you?

There are lots of options for cosmetic dental procedures. The first step is to talk to your cosmetic dentist about your concerns about your current smile and your dreams of what your perfect smile would look like. Cosmetic dentists have received specialized training that enables them to work with your facial features to design the perfect smile for you! Make sure to ask to see before and after photos of existing patients to ensure that your chosen dentist has the skills to help you achieve your goals.

Find out more by scheduling a consultation with Wilbanks Smile Center in Toccoa, GA today at 706-391-8777. Your new smile is simply a phone call away!

Is Gum Contouring Right For You?

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2015

Are you unhappy with your smile because of your gums? If the answer is yes, then gum contouring may be right for you.

Some people have gums that appear uneven or sit too high or too low on their teeth. Gums that cover a large portion of your teeth can make them appear small. This can be caused by genetics or certain health problems.

Gums that are too high make the teeth appear longer. Many times this is caused by gum recession, this is when the gum tissue pulls away from the tooth. Not only does gum recession give you a “horsey” smile, it can also lead to tooth decay. Gum recession occurs as we age but it can also be a sign of gum disease.

Gum contouring is a cosmetic procedure that can dramatically change the appearance of your smile. Many times it is combined with dental veneers for a complete smile makeover that enables you to achieve the smile you’ve always dreamed of. Some gum contouring procedures that are not done for cosmetic reasons include removal of overgrown gum tissue that has covered part of the tooth crown and adding gum tissue to receding gums to protect the tooth roots.

If you are unhappy with your smile but feel that your teeth look fine, it could be your gum line that is bothering you. Talk to your dentist about gum contouring and find out if it is right for you. Choose a dentist for gum contouring based on their experience and training in the area of cosmetic dentistry.

Please contact Wilbanks Smile Center in Toccoa, GA today at 706-391-8777 to discuss gum contouring surgery and find out how you can reshape your smile.

Cosmetic Dentistry: An Introduction

Tuesday, June 17th, 2014

While the health of your teeth and gums are the first priority, cosmetic dentistry procedures are designed to improve the aesthetic vale of your smile. There are a variety of cosmetic treatments available today, depending on your needs and wishes, that can boost your confidence and give you the smile you’ve always dreamed of.

Let’s take a look at some of the most common cosmetic dentistry procedures.

  1. Veneers. Veneers are thin, tooth-colored shells that are fit and bonded to existing teeth to make them more attractive. There are two types of veneers: composite and porcelain.
  2. Tooth Re-shaping/Re-contouring. This technique fixes teeth that are different lengths, or those that have become rough or uneven over time. A small portion of the tooth is shaved off, creating a more uniform appearance within the mouth.
  3. Bonding. Dental bonding is a special tooth-colored plastic filling that can restore and reshape the teeth. Your dentist will sculpt and mold the filling to the desired shape of the tooth. Dental bonding usually lasts up to a decade.
  4. Teeth Whitening. The most convenient and common cosmetic procedure, teeth whitening involves a bleaching gel that removes stains from teeth that come with daily use and age. Whitening can either be performed in-office or with a special at-home kit. Teeth whitening will not work on veneers or crowns.
  5. Dental Crowns. A dental crown restores a broken or cracked tooth to its original shape and size. Crowns also improve the function of a tooth, and there are different types of that serve different purposes and meet specific needs.

What's Your Reason For Whitening?

Monday, April 7th, 2014

Teeth whitening is the most popular cosmetic dental procedure for a good reason – it is a simple and highly effective way of making your smile more vibrant and youthful looking. Want more reasons for whitening your smile? Summer is just around the corner and maybe there is a special wedding, high school or family reunion, or you might just want to look better in those vacation photos!

Whitening your teeth changes the color of your tooth enamel and removes most surface stains and those slightly below the surface. Teeth respond better to bleaching when they are clean so plan your bleaching just after your dental cleaning. During that general dentistry visit, talk to your dentist about bleaching and find out the best option for your teeth.

There are basically two options for highly effective tooth whitening – an in-office one-hour whitening procedure which combines a bleaching material with a special light to speed the process or, custom take home trays with professional strength bleaching gel. The one-hour whitening using Zoom! or a similar system is perfect for people seeking instant gratification. When your appointment is over your teeth will be whiter and brighter.

Take home kits allow patients to be totally in control of their bleaching. You can bleach, following the dentists directions, until you have reached the perfect shade for you. This method is also good for patients who fear sensitivity due to bleaching. By going slowly, this can be avoided.

Remember that not all discolored teeth will react to bleaching. People with yellowish staining typically do very well with teeth whitening. Staining that is gray in color and that may have been caused by medicines does not usually respond to bleaching. If you have bonding, crowns or veneers on one or more of your front teeth you need to realize that those will not bleach. In these cases you may want to seek a consultation about cosmetic dentistry options including dental veneers.

Find out more about getting a whiter, brighter smile by whitening your teeth by contacting Wilbanks Smile Center in Toccoa, GA today at 706-886-9439.

Don't Fear the Dentist: The Benefits of Sedation Dentistry

Thursday, March 20th, 2014

Does the thought of going to the dentist or needing to have dental work done make you feel anxious, distressed or scared?

Dental procedures shouldn’t be something to be and feared and avoided – regular check ups, cleanings, routine and restorative procedures are a vital part of taking care of your health and preserving your smile. Don’t neglect your dental health because of fear of getting into the dentist’s chair!

To ease your worries and discomfort regarding visiting the dentist, let’s look into sedation dentistry and how it can improve your experience. Although sedation dentistry is sometimes referred to as sleep dentistry, most patients are usually remain awake throughout the procedure.

Sedation dentistry implements the use of medication to provide a relaxing and anxiety-free experience for people who are undergoing dental treatment. It can be used on patients of all ages – including young children over a certain age, so consult with your child’s pediatrician and dentist regarding whether sedation dentistry is right for them.

Other benefits of sedation dentistry include:

  1. It accommodates a low pain threshold or sensitive teeth
For those with the often painful and bothersome condition of having sensitive teeth, undergoing dental work can be especially unpleasant. Sedation dentistry makes the process significantly more comfortable for these patients.
  2. It’s great for those who can’t sit still in the dentist’s chair
For younger patients of those who usually get antsy or impatient while undergoing a prolonged dental procedure, sedation therapy allows them to feel settled and calm during complex and lengthy procedures.
  3. It helps those who have a bad gag reflex feel more comfortable
For many people, having any type of dental work done in their mouths makes them feel uncomfortable and triggers their gag reflex. Knowing that sedation dentistry helps to repress this makes it easier for some patients to undergo elective procedures that they may have otherwise been apprehensive about.
  4. It’s perfect for patients who need substantial dental work done
As a result of the soothing and sleepy experience that sedation dentistry provides, patients feel as though time flies by during their treatment, so their lengthy procedures seem to last for only a few minutes.

A Stellar Smile: Beat Tooth Staining with Whitening Treatments

Thursday, March 6th, 2014

Teeth whitening is a safe, common procedure that can drastically whiten and brighten up your smile. A lighter smile can make a person look younger and more attractive. Over the years, many factors can cause one’s smile to become darkened and stained.

Some of these factors include eating acidic foods that wear away tooth enamel, such as sodas, tea and fruit drinks. Particles in food coloring can also build up on the tooth surface over time, and even all-natural, healthy foods such as apples and potatoes can stain your teeth over time.

Natural aging, dental trauma, hereditary factors and health problems can also play a role in a person’s tooth color. Certain medications, such as antibiotics, antihistamines and drugs taken to treat high blood pressure, can also lead to tooth discoloration.

Smoking, chewing tobacco and using other tobacco products, as well as drinking wine and coffee, are also infamous for negatively affecting your smile. Neglecting biannual dental tooth cleanings and not cleaning teeth thoroughly enough during your at-home dental cleaning routine can also yellow your smile.

Along with getting regular dental check-ups and cleanings, as well as thoroughly cleaning your teeth as part of your daily routine, you can maintain your smile with whitening.

Wilbanks Smile Center offers ZOOM! Whitening, an increasingly popular chair-side whitening system that brightens patients’ teeth in a single office visit. Zoom! Whitening is fast and convenient, and is more effective and convenient than other whitening treatments, which only consist of wearing cumbersome trays or strips. ZOOM! Whitening is coupled with our take-home Nite-White system, which provides patients with state-of-the-art tooth whitening.

Another one of the whitening treatments that Wilbanks offers is the Rembrandt™ One-Hour Smile Whitening Program, which uses the Sapphire Plasma Arc Light for dual-arch whitening. This light individually whitens teeth for uniform shade consistency, which creates a brilliantly white, even smile.

Depending on the tooth’s condition and what others aspects of their teeth that the patient wants to improve, one or more teeth  can also be whitened using dental bonding or veneers. Tooth-colored fillings consisting of composite resin, glass ionomer cement (GIC) or porcelain ceramics can also make cavities and other dental procedures practically invisible to the untrained eye.

Don’t Neglect Your Smile!

Thursday, February 27th, 2014

A well-maintained, beautiful smile is a major asset both aesthetically and for your overall health. However, many Americans chronically neglect their smiles, by skipping their biannual tooth cleanings or not taking proper care of their teeth.

According to recent studies, nearly 60 percent of people say that one’s smile is the first facial feature that they notice when meeting someone new. Although society puts a high value on overall appearance, a person’s smile is especially noticeable.

Firstly, your smile is front and center – your smile is what you use to greet the world, and it reflects your overall health as well. For example, it can show if you are a smoker, and even reveals whether your hygiene habits.

If you aren’t flossing regularly, don’t brush thoroughly and skip dental cleanings, your teeth will reflect that, and other will notice. Despite that fact, many people don’t pay enough attention to maintaining their own smile.

Recent statistics show that Americans spend $100 billion on hair care products annually, however, they only spend $2 billion on dental care products. This reflects what consumers view as important – even though hair is rated much lower than teeth on the list of which features people first notice when meeting someone.

With so many people choosing to spend more money on their hair than on dental care products such as floss and mouthwash, it should come as no surprise that 80 percent of people are not happy with their smile.

The things that people want to change about their smiles varies, but some of the most common requests are to whiten or straighten their smile. Crooked teeth can be improved through braces, clear aligners such as Invisalign, or veneers. Porcelain veneers can address and correct many aesthetic flaws in one’s smile.

Along with cosmetic dentistry, following suggested annual dental treatments will drastically improve your smile’s health and appearance. Getting a dental cleaning twice a year, receiving an annual exam and following a thorough at-home cleaning routine will go a long way toward attaining and maintaining a beautiful smile.

Smiles Are Important In New Relationships

Wednesday, February 19th, 2014

Smiles lead the way for new relationships, both business and personal. Over 70% of women and about 60% of men agree that a smile is the first thing they notice in a potential romantic partner! Studies have shown that people with nice smiles are perceived as more intelligent and more accomplished than those with unattractive teeth.

Do you love your smile? If not, let’s talk about the ways that you can achieve the smile of your dreams.

  • Orthodontics for a crooked smile. Maybe you never had braces as a child or maybe your teeth have shifted with age (very common). The majority of people who have straightened their teeth as adults say they would gladly do it again. The good news today is – many cases of crooked teeth can be made straight using invisible braces called Invisilign. Instead of brackets and wires, invisalign uses a series of clear aligners to gently move teeth. No one will even know you are wearing braces!
  • Dental veneers can be used to correct problems ranging from crooked or malformed teeth to repairing permanent discoloration that cannot be bleached away. Dental veneers can make short teeth look longer and more youthful.
  • Dental bleaching may be all you need. As we age our teeth become stained and yellow. Dental cleanings can remove some of these surface stains but to really brighten your smile requires a dental bleaching. Dental bleaching options include take home trays, which offer more control, or in-office whitening.

Please contact Wilbanks Smile Center in Toccoa, GA today to find out more about your options for a perfect smile. We can be reached at 706-886-9439.
