High Fluoride Toothpaste Offers Protection Against Tooth Decay

Several years ago in Sweden a high fluoride brand of toothpaste was introduced with the hopes it would provide additional protection for those at high risk of tooth decay. Researchers have now performed the first scientific evaluation of the use of this toothpaste and the study has found a method of using the paste that offers four times the cavity protection.Wilbanks Smile Center shares research about fluoride protection for cavity prone patients.

The study had volunteers brush with the high fluoride toothpaste or regular toothpaste either two or three times per day using a variety of brushing techniques. Researcher Anna Nordstrom said “The study revealed that those who used a high-fluoride toothpaste three times per day had four times better fluoride protection in the mouth than those who used standard toothpaste twice a day.”

The researchers also looked at whether just massaging the toothpaste onto the teeth with a finger was as effective as the third brushing. It turns out that the massage method worked for giving teeth the additional boost of fluoride in the middle of the day but they cautioned that this method cannot replace brushing in the morning and at night.

In the US toothpastes with high levels of fluoride are available only with a prescription. If you are at high risk for cavities using this type of toothpaste can provide extra protection. This research also shows us that if you can’t brush after lunch the old trick of rubbing toothpaste on with your finger to freshen your breath can also protect your teeth as long as it is a fluoride toothpaste. After using the high fluoride toothpaste – don’t rinse! You’ll just wash away all that protection.
