Oral Appliance Found Effective for Treating Sleep ApneaTuesday, August 30th, 2011, 1:25 pm
A report issued by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality has confirmed that CPAP and custom oral appliances are the most successful treatments for obstructive sleep apnea. The effectiveness review was done by researchers at Tufts Medical Center.
At least 12 million Americans suffer from obstructive sleep apnea, a condition in which patients stop breathing during sleep. Breathing ceases because the soft tissues of the mouth and throat relax during sleep and collapse, blocking the airway. Untreated sleep apnea has been linked to heart disease, stroke, diabetes and a higher rate of accidents due to daytime sleepiness.
Treatment for sleep apnea can include continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) which uses a machine to push air through a mask to keep the patients airway and throat open. Many patients find sleeping with the apparatus difficult or impossible even though it is a highly effective treatment.
For patients who are CPAP intolerant or who just don’t like the idea of CPAP an oral appliance is a wonderful option. An oral appliance is similar in size to an orthodontic retainer or mouthguard. Custom created in a lab these appliances are designed to gently move the lower jaw in a forward position which keeps the airway open during sleep putting a stop of snoring and episodes of sleep apnea.
