Dentistry In 3-D

Friday, April 6th, 2012, 5:36 pm

3-D is expected in a movie theater, but 3-D in a dental office? This cutting edge technology is called 3-D Cone Beam Tomography (CBCT). It is a special type of x-ray machine we use in situations where regular dental x-rays will not give us sufficient information.

This technology enables dentists to view life-like 3-D images of bone structure, tooth orientation, nerve canals and pathology of the scanned area. This enables us to diagnose and treat with greater accuracy. For example, placing a dental implant using this 3-D technology allows us to see exactly where nerves and sinuses are which is essential in this procedure. There are even times when the cone beam scan may tell us that a procedure is unnecessary.

A wonderful aspect of cone beam technology is the reduction in radiation compared to the old medical CT scanners. The dental CBCT allows us to focus our scan very precisely making for a very safe and comfortable experience for our patients.

Staying on the cutting edge of dental technology allows Wilbanks Smile Center to offer a level of comprehensive oral health care that cannot be found elsewhere in our region.
