Replace Mercury Fillings for a Healthier LifeTuesday, September 14th, 2010, 1:07 pm
Over 150 million Americans have mercury amalgam fillings in their teeth. The majority of them have at least eight mercury amalgam fillings. Every time these millions of amalgam fillings are stressed, mercury vapor is released. The general population in America absorbs more mercury from dental fillings than from any other source. Studies demonstrate that two-thirds of the mercury absorbed by average folks who don’t work with mercury is derived from amalgam fillings. On average, eighty percent of the mercury inhaled into the lungs is absorbed into the bloodstream.
No studies have been done that proves amalgam to be 100% safe. Groups and organizations questioning the safety of amalgam include the World Health Organization and various European researchers. The American Dental Association approves of amalgam fillings because they are cheap – not because they are the best material for filling teeth.
Mercury is an extremely poisonous metabolic, enzymatic, and genetic toxin. It is much worse than lead, cadmium or arsenic. Given the choice, I doubt that most of us would choose to place lead or arsenic in our bodies – so why allow mercury to stay in your body year after year? On top of the hazards that mercury amalgams contain, they are also not very effective filling materials. They expand and contract when they come into contact with heat or cold giving them a limited life-span and causing teeth to crack. A cracked tooth is not only painful but must be repaired using a crown.
If you have old amalgam fillings it is better to replace them before they begin to cause problems. While you, as a patient, can’t tell that the filling is breaking down it is obvious to your dentist. Waiting to replace the filling can cause larger problems down the road due to decay forming under the filling leading to possible root canal or abscess.
