College Students Need Summer Dental Care

College students all over the country are busy cramming for finals and finishing up those last few term papers. Typically they have waited until the last minute to begin all this activity which leads to all-night marathon sessions with vast quantities of poor food choices and sugary, caffeinated beverages. In addition to adding to the “freshman 15″ these habits also lead to poor dental health.

Every year we see students come home from college with new dental decay and gum infections. Living on their own at school usually means that the old brushing and flossing habits have been abandoned (mostly because parents aren’t around to nag about hygiene)! The sweet coffee drinks, colas and energy drinks that students drink on a regular basis pack a one-two punch when it comes to our teeth. The acids in the drinks damage the enamel surface and the sugar feeds the bacteria that live in our mouths that cause tooth decay and gum disease.

If you have a student coming home for the summer please contact our office as soon as possible at 706-886-9439 to schedule an appointment. While they are with us we can give them an “education” about the importance of good oral health care and good nutrition.
