Don't Try This At Home!Friday, March 11th, 2011, 11:11 am
The Chicago Dental Society surveyed member dentists in Fall 2010. One of the astounding things discovered by this survey was the high number of people who try to “self treat” before they visit the dentist.
Nearly 70 percent of the dentists who responded to the survey reported caring for a patient who had tried to treat their own dental problems before visiting the dentist. One of the most common treatments – Super Glue! People try to repair broken crowns, bridgework and dentures with the same stuff that you use to fix broken knick knacks and accidentally glue your fingers together with. The report didn’t mention how many people glue their lips together…
Also reported, using nail files to smooth chipped teeth (ouch!) and the over-use of teething gels to mask dental pain.
The most amazing thing – more than one dentist reported having a patient who tried a do-it-yourself root canal using power tools.
The one thing that patients who attempt these at home treatments have in common is that they created a much more expensive procedure following their do-it-yourself efforts than if they would have just visited their dentist at the first sign of any problem. An even better way to save money on dental care is prevention. By visiting your dentist on a regular basis, getting regular dental cleanings from a dental hygienist and brushing and flossing regularly at home you can avoid the need for expensive treatment down the road.
