English Dental Patients a Fearful BunchThursday, April 21st, 2011, 9:46 am
The British Dental Health Foundation did a survey that discovered that visiting the dentist makes the British more nervous than spiders and snakes. The study suggested that half of the adults surveyed were considered to have moderate to extreme dental anxiety. Maybe this explains the poor state of Austin Powers teeth!
The study may appear frivolous, but according to Foundation head Dr. Nigel Carter “Everyone in the professions knows that dental anxiety is a major barrier for many people to visit their dentist.”
Many American’s also suffer from anxiety or fear about dental visits. While the rates probably aren’t as high – for many people this anxiety affects their oral health, and therefore their general health (we know that gum disease is linked to many other illnesses such as heart disease and diabetes).
There are options available if you suffer from anxiety over dental visits. Sedation Dentistry gives you the ability to easily and comfortably get the care you need in a peaceful, relaxed state of mind. There are several types of conscious sedation available to you ranging from nitrous oxide (laughing gas), oral sedatives or IV sedation. Which type is best for you will be determined by your needs and your overall health.
