Oprah and Michael Douglas Spread the Word About Oral CancersWednesday, May 11th, 2011, 10:05 am
Last month Michael Douglas appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show. As a throat cancer survivor, Mr. Douglas wanted to share information about oral, head and neck cancers.
Cancers affecting the head and neck account for 6% of all malignant cancers in the United States. While the vast majority of these cancers are linked to tobacco use (smoking and chewing tobacco), the Human Papilloma Virus appears to be related to over half of tonsil cancers.
Unfortunately, many people do not receive regular screenings for head and neck cancers. Because of the location of these cancers they often affect breathing, eating, voice, speaking and appearance. In two-thirds of the cases the cancer will be found as a stage 3 or stage 4 disease.
How can you protect yourself? Avoid tobacco products and alcohol. People who use both are at greater risk than people who use them alone. Eat a healthy diet high in fresh vegetables and fruits.
Because most oral cancers form on the lips, tongue or floor of the mouth you should visit your dentist regularly for oral cancer screenings. An oral cancer screening is part of your comprehensive dental examination. Regular screenings can detect the early stages of oral cancer or conditions that may lead to cancer.
Please don’t delay. Contact Wilbanks Smile Center today at 706-886-9439 to schedule your comprehensive examination including an oral cancer screening.
