Help for Overcoming Fear of Dental VisitsThursday, September 1st, 2011, 5:03 pm
Fear of visiting the dentist ranges from simple nervousness to complete panic attacks and is more common than you might think. Dental fears are also not limited to American dental patients. A study was recently published in the British Dental Journal that suggested that cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) could help people who suffer from severe dental phobias.
The study looked at a group of patients with extremely severe fear of visiting the dentist. This group of 60 patients were referred to a special dental clinic for dentistry using IV sedation. Half of the group was offered CBT prior to treatment and 21 patients accepted. Out of those 21 patients, 20 were able to have their dental work completed without the IV sedation. A review of the patients after 10 years showed that 19 patients (one could not be located) continued to have regular dental visits without sedation. It is estimated that about 12% of people suffer from extreme anxiety over dental care.
This is wonderful news for patients who avoid getting needed care because of anxiety issues. However, cognitive behavioral therapists can be difficult to find. In the meantime sedation dentistry can still offer you the opportunity to have the care you need without the fear. Depending upon your level of anxiety Wilbanks Smile Center offers varying levels of sedation and our Team is highly skilled at putting patients at ease.
