The Florida Probe

The Florida Probe sounds like a new TV show about uncovering government corruption in the Sunshine State but actually it is a very important tool used by our dental hygiene team. The Florida Probe is a computerized periodontal probe which allows us to measure the depth of the pockets in the gums surrounding a tooth. The measurements give a good picture of the health of the gum tissue.

The depth of the pockets and any related bleeding during probing  relate to severity of gum disease.

Computerized chart shows problem areas marked in red.

The pockets around each tooth are assigned a number based upon their depth. Pockets depths greater than 3mm or pockets that bleed upon probing indicate problem areas. Depending upon the severity, those areas may need special periodontal treatment.

Using a computerized probe enables us to show you the results of your examination in a very clear format. Using this information it is much easier for our hygiene team to work with our patients to maintain good oral health.
